Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Looking for a specific Uncle John's Band and...

My boss asked me if I could find him an UJB that:

- Was played out of another tune

- Most importantly, after it started and was noticeably UJB, they went on and jammed for 20-25 minutes before going back into and playing the whole song.

Sounds very interesting and rare to me - he could have been trippin, can anyone jump in?

Any help is always appreciated.

- And while I'm at it, I have always been looking for this show (one of my first tapes) maybe from the late 70's early 80's. Probably the start of the second set, Bobby says, "After years and years of playing, we finally learned how to tune up." They then blast into a very nice Scarlet/Fire.

Would love to find this one again for sentimental value.

He could very possibly be referring to Red Rocks 9/6/83. There is a 17 minute space jam into Uncle John's. At the 6:58 mark, Jerry, very clearly, breaks out the UJB lick and continues until about 7:12 mark. The band then proceeds to go back into the space segment for almost 10 minutes before UJB comes back. This was a special show!! The jam goes Playin>Drums>Space>UJB>Playin (reprise)>Throwing Stones>NFA

Great, great show. The Birdsong, LL>Supplication is amazing as is the entire 2nd set.

Couldn't find one from 83, but this will have to do: Dead at Red Rocks in '87 (I'm in there somewhere)

Am weighing both now...but if you have a preference, please let me know.

You're Awesome!

** I am definitely going with the first one.

Doesn't fit your bill, BUT I always loved the instrumental versions from the Fall of 69 in which they go into it during a jam...no vocals, but you realize what a great tune it was to emerge in that context. The DP from 11-8, I think, is the one that has it...think they did it more than once, maybe 11-7 too?

Sorry, don't have the time to track it down...

After an extremely non-scientific search - the 6-19-94 seems to fit the bill most closely:

6-19-94 Playin' In The Band-> Uncle John's Band-> Playin' In The Band Jam-> Uncle John's Band Reprise->

11-17-73 Playin' In The Band-> Uncle John's Band-> Morning Dew-> Uncle John's Band-> Playin' In The Band

7-10-81 Drums-> Uncle John's Band-> Playin' In The Band-> China Doll-> Uncle John's Band-> Playin' In The Band-> Around & Around-> Good Lovin'

9-6-80 Playin' In The Band-> Uncle John's Band-> Drums-> Not Fade Away-> The Wheel-> Uncle John's Band-> Playin' In The Band-

Thanks, I will have a listen this weekend and see if it comes close to what he was talking about. Of course I mentioned some of these pairings right off the bat, but he said no, it was different. Let's see.
